Therapy in a box…A Big Box called The Cummer Museum and Gardens

25Aug12

Carol & I are passionate about the Cummer Museum and Gardens here in Jacksonville. Last night’s gala of local artists was a “must see” with standing room only…See more @ http://www.folioweekly.com/folio0821wkl012.php

Previously I blogged about the museum and the Post Mexican Revolution Exhibit @ https://albagocius.wordpress.com/2012/06/05/come-to-cummer-and-see-the-hope-of-art/

In light of the bigger picture…The Cummer Museum and Gardens,  for many, offers a  refuge from the pressures of the day and replenishes the human spirit…I guess that’s why I am drawn to it and begs the question, ” Can visiting an art museum be a therapeutic experience?”

Here’s a related study that gives credence to the importance of art…

http://www.arttherapyblog.com/mental-health/study-shows-that-participating-in-cultural-activities-is-associated-with-good-health/

“You may be aware of the variety of benefits of art therapy and how it can have a positive effect on autism, PTSD and cancer…but what about the benefits of just looking at, or observing, art?

A recent study has explored the association with attending cultural activities and good health, satisfaction, low anxiety, and depression. While this applies to both genders, the study found a stronger association with males. Men who participated in receptive cultural activities (i.e. going to museums, attending a musical or play) were also much more likely to be happy and healthy.

Among other things, the study looked at the impact of what they deemed “receptive cultural activities” (basically, an observer of art) and “creative cultural activities” (a participant in the creation of art). The study found a strong association with both types and good overall health….”

If the Cummer Museum and Gardens could be considered “therapy in a box,” then Hope McMath is the head therapist!
